USA vs. Nigeria
The USWNT advances to the knockout stage of the World Cup after winning group D, “The Group of Death,” after tonight’s win over Nigeria. Who other than the American legend Abby Wambach would score the game's only goal and push the United States one step closer to their third World Cup ever? …. Maybe Julie Johnston whose finish in the first half was called offsides or fan favorite Alex Morgan who did have a chance early in the second half, but was saved by the goalkeeper. Tonight it was Wambach who was the hero, scoring her 14th career World cup goal. She struck a beautiful volley off of a corner kick from Rapinoe just before halftime, which gave the U.S. momentum going into the second half.
The U.S. played well in possession throughout the game, a key part of their win tonight. The Nigerians were so fast and physical, their athleticism was not easy to match. The Americans used quick passes and quick thinking and were able to keep the ball moving and away from their defensive third. We must give a HUGE credit to the back four who played amazing, led by Julie Johnston. On one particular play, Johnston was able to chase down a Nigeria forward who was on a break away and block her shot with a slide tackle. This type of play reflects the determination and hard work the women have, especially in defense. The USWNT have huge potential to make a run for the cup, allowing no goals from the run of play through the group stage. The women will play their round of 16 match on Monday, June 22nd at 8pm, their opponent is still TBD.
