USA vs. Colombia
The USWNT first knockout round match was a tale of two halves. The US came out of the locker room a bit slow and sluggish and did not pose a REAL threat to the Colombians aside from a couple half chances and an offside goal from Abby Wambach. The play was not the most fluent the US has played in this tournament with miscommunication and poor passes being played. The score at halftime was 0-0, a score the Colombians were proud of, but not the Americans.
Alex Morgan wasted little time in the second half drawing a penalty and a sending off for the Colombian Goalkeeper! The Colombians down to ten players, and Wambach stepping up to take the penalty, with a chance to tie a World Cup goal scoring record, the momentum was surely the Americans… UNTIL Wambach Missed! The goalkeeper went the wrong way, but Wambach missed the goal completely and the game remained scoreless. At this point I am sure a lot of us thought this might just not be the United States’ day, but Morgan had other ideas and the attacks kept coming. Down the right flank she breaks into the 18-yard box and strikes the ball towards the goal, maybe with the intention of a cross, but the ball deflects off of the goalkeeper in into the net, giving the USA a 1-0 lead! This was Morgan’s first goal of this World Cup and her third World Cup goal ever.
Ten minutes later Meghan Rapinoe dribbles into the box and takes on two players, getting by one, and then was brought down by the second, giving the Unites States their SECOND penalty of the game! Wambach this time gave Carli Lloyd the nod after her miss, and Lloyd finishes with ease, giving the US a more comfortable 2-0 lead.
The US would hang on to a less convincing win, but nonetheless a WIN that will move them on to the remaining 8 teams of the 2015 WWC!
The USWNT will play China on Friday at 7:30 in the WC Quarterfinals. Be sure to tune in. GO USA!!
