USWNT Olympic Qualifying Roster

Jill Ellis announced her roster for the Olympic Qualifiers and many U.S. fans (including SGP) were surprised by it! Only 13 of the 23 players from the winning World Cup team are on the roster. This includes retired players; Abby Wambach, Lauren Holiday, Shannon Boxx and Lori Chalupny (our hearts hurt), injured; Christie Rampone and Megan Rapinoe (ugh get better quick)pregnant; Amy Rodriguez and Sydney Leroux (we will babysit, just throwing it out there), and sadly some left off; Heather O’Reilly and Whitney Engen (WHY!?), leading this to be the youngest U.S. team that Jill Ellis has coached.

Don't get us wrong, the girls who have been added to the roster are fantastic and we can't wait to watch them play but it's an adjustment after following the other players for so long (literally, we followed them around Canada for the World Cup).

So - you're excited to see the roster and get your jerseys ready for the Olympics BUT WAIT the qualifier's roster isn't necessarily the players going to Rio (we know this is cray).  Only 18 players will be able to go to the games, so already 2 aren't going to be taken (20-2=18 - yeah we're good). Also, take into consideration that injured Christie Rampone and Megan Rapione could be healthy and ready to go in time and Heather O'Reilly and Whitney Engen are still in the running. Don't forget that our gal Julie Johnston wasn't on the roster for the World Cup Qualifiers and then she ended up kicking some serious arse there...so you really never know!

So without further ado here is the Olympic Qualifying Roster!

Goalkeepers: Ashlyn Harris (Orlando Pride), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars) and Hope Solo (Seattle Reign FC).

Defenders: Jaelene Hinkle (Western New York Flash), Julie Johnston (Chicago Red Stars), Meghan Klingenberg (Portland Thorns FC), Ali Krieger (Washington Spirit), Kelley O'Hara (Sky Blue FC), Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City) and Emily Sonnett (Portland Thorns FC).

Midfielders: Morgan Brian (Houston Dash), Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns FC), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Carli Lloyd (Houston Dash) and Samantha Mewis (Western New York Flash).

Forwards: Crystal Dunn (Washington Spirit), Stephanie McCaffrey (Boston Breakers), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Christen Press (Chicago Red Stars) and Mallory Pugh (Real Colorado).

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Excited to see how Pugh does this summer! Sad to see that leroux won’t be playing but happy for her baby news! Alex and her would have made such a dynamic duo. The one thing that shocked me most was that O’reilly isn’t on the roster! That’s crazy! She deserves to be on that roster! She’s been having such good performances lately. I want to know why Ellis didn’t add her ?

I think they should have kept Adrianna Franch as a goalie. She was amazing at OSU and is very competitive.
